Here are some things that I love about this Maui Modern Wedding Inspiration Shoot:

1.  The designer is rad.  First time I went to her house I saw and fell in love with her pantry.  It’s like, 3 stories high.  It has a ladder.  It’s like the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland.  She’s an artist, and when I saw her signature piece, I was like… why don’t we hang out more?  Black, white and blue.  Modern and geometric.  My favorite colors in a modern display.  If ever artists were meant for each other.

2.  The dress is rad.  So she took her signature pattern and had Blayne Walsh, a good friend of hers and one of the designers from Project Runway Season 5, make it into this BAD ASS DRESS.  She posted a photo of the dress on Facebook like 6 months ago and I immediately messaged her and was like I HAVE TO SHOOT THAT DRESS.    I can’t wait to meet the bride who wears this dress for her wedding for reals.  Because she will, obviously, also be rad.

3. It’s on the cheap.  So, it just so happens that this summer was kind of a summer off for me.  Which was great because I had lots of time for DIY.  But it was rough because I had like… no money to throw into this.  It was like that weekend, years and years ago when I still lived on the east coast, when my hubby and I were totally broke and yet decided we needed a weekend getaway to the Cape.  We were literally searching under the seats of the car for change enough to park at the beach and get gas.  We laughed so much.  The fact that we had no money MADE that weekend.  So that’s the attitude I had when approaching this shoot.  I gave myself a budget of $200 and then used all stuff that I already had at my house.  Which was easy because black, white and blue are my favorite colors.

4. This was for me – it is so hard for me not to get caught up in what other photographers are doing.  Especially when like, everyone and their brother is a photographer anymore.  I see so many friends and colleagues getting published and doing amazing things and it can be hard to not get caught up in where you think you should be in your career.  So this shoot was about just doing a shoot that I would love, that I would be proud of and that I didn’t care what anyone else thought.  My colors, my ideas, an amazing dress that I love and that’s that.  And honestly, I can not tell you how awesome it was to just shoot without having to worry about who to impress or what expectation there might be.  I just… had fun.

5. It’s 75% film – I second shot for my pal Wendy of Wendy Laurel Photography a few months ago and man did it inspire me to play more with film (she shoots ONLY film).  I got my first successful sun flare with film during this shoot and 95% of them were exposed properly… wooohooooo!!

So, I’ve been smiling pretty big for the past couple weeks.  I know I say that everything is my favorite, but really, this surprise proposal was definitely a favorite.  You see, Lauren flew here to Maui for her cousin’s wedding.  The day after she left, her boyfriend, Manuel, hopped plane to Maui, without her knowing, surprised her on the beach and popped the question.  And I was there to capture it all.  I am getting serious smile lines people.  For reals.

How romantic.  And it was totally funny to me because when she first saw Manuel, she just looked at him like, who is this guy who creeped up behind me.  It was so out of context for her… and when she realized what was going on, she was shaking and smiling and crying and could barely breathe.  It was like her legs were going to buckle under her.  It was… well… just perfect.

HUGE props to Manuel for being super romantic AND big props to her family for keeping the secret and helping organize the whole thing so Lauren didn’t have a clue.

So many congrats to this couple!

I recently started taking maui dance lessons from friend and fellow photographer Ajja, to curb my irrepressible desire to dance in the middle of the street while taking my morning walk.  I’ve always loved to dance, but for some reason, haven’t really fed that part of myself in a long time.  Dancing feels amazing.  Not sure how it looks, because I refuse to look in a mirror, but it’s all about the feeling.  It makes me feel good.  And it makes me feel even better that I’m doing it, in a class, with a teacher, as opposed to on my walk where people who see me think I’m a little nuts.

So I was sitting in my office a few weeks ago, envisioning a wall full of black and white dance photos, and low and behold I got an inquiry, same day, from Kim of Dancewear Maui LLC, stating she was looking to fill a wall in her new store with black and white dance photos of her daughter and her daughter’s good friend.

Uh.  Hello Awesome!

This shoot was seriously so much fun.  These girls are so beautifully talented.  And the fact that I have no idea what any of the dance moves are called, led to me having to demonstrate what I wanted them to do.  Which was, I’m sure, hilarious.

A small collection of these can now be found, framed, on a wall, at Dancewear Maui, LLC in Wailuku, which just had it’s grand opening on Friday.  So go check them out.  Carrying everything from gymnastics leotards to pointe shoes, you’re sure to find something there to adorn your inner dancer.

As a Maui Photographer, I find inspiration in the simplest of places.  My yard, for example.  My yard is like a treasure trove.  I don’t personally have a green thumb.  But despite my unintentional attempts at death-by-neglect, rain keeps coming, chickens keep pooping and things keep blooming and blowing my mind every time.  Keeps being a Maui Photographer fun and different.  And it’s a nice reminder that you don’t always have to DO so much to have beautiful results.  I am a recovering workaholic.  I ran myself into the ground last year, a story I’ll share soon probably, and one of the many amazing things I learned during that experience was that I could, actually, sit down every once in a while and things would, you know, still get done.  Maybe not as fast as I thought they should, maybe not in the way I thought they should, but they would happen, as intended and all I really needed to do was just chill the f*** out and enjoy.

So that’s my little message to you on this fine Aloha Friday.  Chill out and enjoy everything around you.  Because despite what you think, it’s there for you to enjoy, not to control.  😉

My favorite thing about this Maui Family Photography session is the family.  You see… 3 years ago, they got married here in Maui and I got to photograph their wedding.  And then almost 3 years to the day, I got to see them all again.  I love seeing clients again.  Especially when they’ve got a little man as adorably sweet as this little man.  He totally gets the award for most cooperative 4 year old.  He followed every instruction, which I eventually stopped giving him because everything he did on his own without instruction from me was WAY CUTER.  Like the way he held his moms face, and the way he snuggled up against his dad.  And the way he would rest his head on his hands.  Goodness gracious I am completely smitten by him.  Was smiling ear to ear while editing this session.  Here are some favs from this Maui Family Photography session.
